subtexture mural at welling court walls

welling_court_finished1

“It was just supposed to be a bike ride”

Danny and I got on our bikes and headed over to Astoria, Queens to check out the Welling Court Walls project and ended up getting some wall space! Organized by Adhoc Art, this is a public beautification project with walls transformed by a large group of internationally known street artists.

This was my first mural project! We literally found out about this on Sat afternoon. We were given some free paint (they actually had orange!) So we were able to tag the wall with some signature subtexture stripes. Then I went home and roughed out a design.
I wanted to do something with road signs, but my roadsign chicks wouldn’t have been appropriate for this space. The wall was located at the end of a short street and drivers could go either right or left – hence: “ANY WAY”

The background is made up of stencils made from tire tread designs and pointing hands.

We had great response from people from the neighborhood, even after we got burned for $20 by Joe, who did a reverse Tom Sawyer on us and took off with our beer money after painting for a few minutes. Other folks heard about us getting played and bought us beer!

Second is “Pull the Devil’s Tail” presented by the Ugly Art Room
A group show of prints showing in a church basement which houses a
vintage proofing press, you’ll be able to print your own print!

Opening Reception: 6-8pm, Saturday, June 18, 2011
Location: Greenpoint Reformed Church, 138 Milton St, Brooklyn NY

To “pull the Devil’s tail” refers to the compact between Faust and the
devil – “Faust having taken to Paris – Gutenberg’s first bible to sell
were scrutinized by the Church authorities. Since all the pages of
each book matched – it was considered the work of the Devil. Faust was
run out of town nearly escaping with his life.”

Printing, which takes two people – a puller and a beater (who applies
ink to the type) – requires pulling the devil’s tail, the handle which
lowers the platen onto the press board.

Guests at the opening will take a turn to pull the Devil’s tail on the
antique cast-iron hand press and take home an original Jesus Head

About Genuine Motorworks:
The True American Lifestyle has long past: as fast food, instant gratification and a disposable products mindset has taken place. The 1940’s & 1950’s had a culture of people living a simple uncluttered life, with products that lasted a lifetime. Apple Pie, Baseball and the Open Road were all true icons of America. Genuine Motorworks wants to tap back into this time of a basic, simplistic life, one of hard work, quality and integrity. We’re bringing back the American brands that thrived and had real meaning behind the label, while searching for the artisans that are producing quality products today.
The products and brands we carry all have an American background with an emphasis on being Made in the USA and we are dedicated to the guy who still likes to get his hands dirty.

Urbanites show at the Distillery in Boston

Wow my grandparents sure would be surprised! I’m in an art show in Southie, not far from where my mom’s family lived in the projects in the 40’s (that’s before they moved up Jefferson’s style to a Victorian in Jamaica Plain)

Urbanites
November 18 – December 16, 2010
Opening Reception:  Thursday, Nov 18, 6 -9pm

Historically, artists have often found the “city” as a muse.  The energy, technology, population, monumental structures, and pace of life can easily be inspiring.  The translation and resulting representation of urban influence may vary from dark and dismal to magnificent, palatial, or even serene.  It is this individual absorption of the metropolitan experience that formulates one’s own take on citylife, and the artwork that may stem from it.
Corresponding with this theme, The Distillery Gallery presents “Urbanites”, a show of artwork that exhibits reflections of experiences within cities.  2D and 3D works will form a survey of responses to urban stimuli, while the gallery itself – located within a mid-19th century rum distillery – will also serve as a character in the exhibit, still donning many traits indicative of its former industrial use within the city limits of Boston.
Curated by Scott Chasse, this exhibit will feature Boston-based artists Josh Falk, Sean Flood, Kenji Nakayama, and Adam O’Day; Brooklyn-based artistChris Smith; and the Philadelphia-based artist Chris Clark.
